The Lord is my Banner
Banners, in the ancient world, were also called a “standard” or a “flag”. It was a metal object affixed to a tall pole and meant to be a reference point for those in battle. They could look up and be reminded of the unified passion and purpose of the fight—and a reminder of their identity. Also, a fixed point of return when it was time to gather or regroup. It can be difficult to attribute practices from the ancient world into our modern society. But taking a moment to understand the purpose and meaning of a banner (a rally cry; a point of reference) will open up the depth and beauty of scripture as it reveals the tender care and love Adonai has for us.
