Uncovering A More Roomy Life

There never was a time when “the invisible things” of God were shining out so clearly through our study of what he has created in the world. Astronomy, electricity, radio, chemistry, and the physical laws all point to a more omniscient God and a more roomy life than we ever dreamed. We are beginning to see that every part of the world has a spiritual meaning.
Bertha Condé, 1926, Spiritual Life
Ever since I read this quote in Bertha Conde’s book, Spiritual Life, I haven’t stopped thinking about what it means to have a “more roomy life.” Doesn’t that sound intriguing? How do you imagine a roomy life? What does that look like for you?
It’s been 100 years since Bertha Condè wrote the words in the above quote. Think about how much has changed and advanced scientifically since then. With quantum physics, our world just exploded exponentially—we can’t even begin to understand the vastness of all of creation: how big and how small. Ms. Condé was pointing out how science proves and expands our understanding of the spiritual. Meaning, there are layers and layers to living. One door leads to a larger room and another door. The next door leads to an even bigger room and a bigger door…this is how the spiritual realm works.
As we march forward in existence, it becomes increasingly more obvious that there is a spiritual reality to it all. Do we have the ability to perceive the roominess—the possibilities? Can we see how God’s ways influence our practical lives?
Thinking of what a roomy life is, Ephesians 3:20 comes to mind:
Unto him therefore that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us...
A roomy life is one that taps into the exceedingly and abundantly of the Kingdom of God.
Sounds cool, but what does that look like in real life? For each person, the answer will be a bit different. However, in general, I think a roomy life means we can see the opportunities in each day. Whether it’s that we have the perception to notice when people around us are in need and take action; when we have the courage to invite others to get to know us; can move past fear to step out in faith and try something beyond our ability; know how to slow down and appreciate the people and creation around us; are able to be fully present in a moment; can see God’s hand in everything; find joy in the little things; and carry a supernatural peace.
That’s quite a list, but as we mature and learn to walk by the Spirit of God, our lives expand and become more “roomy.”
In my pondering on what it means to have a more roomy life and what prevents us from having it, I jotted down several thoughts and listed them below. As you look this over, imagine what life looks like in these scenarios. Can you picture in your mind how certain actions and mindsets make our lives feel smaller or roomier? What would you include in this list?

When we can see the hand of God in everything around us, we begin to understand that He operates so differently than we do. His perception of reality is far different than ours (Is. 55:8-9). If we adjust our eyes to see by His Spirit, our life becomes roomy (Ephesians 1:17-23). Science is actively catching up with what God is trying to reveal about Himself and His Kingdom through His Word. Increasing our capacity to see with different eyes opens up an ever-increasing new world.
It all starts with finding joy in the little things and being grateful for what is in our lives right now. As we do this, our joy increases, and we feel our lives expand. But it starts with what’s in our hands, not with waiting for something better. We can all grow in this area. Whether it’s relationship-based, financial, situational, or health-wise…think of what is something you want changed in your life. Now, ask God to help you be grateful for it, now. In my experience, this is the single greatest factor in developing a more roomy life.
